Health & Support for a 12 - 18 month old

•  Communication is getting easier; “da da” or “ma- 
    ma” is used.
•  Keep your home safe as your toddler begins to
    explore.
•  She needs help labeling her feelings and coping 
    with her frustrations.
•  As she has more control of her body she will learn
    more about herself, offer large areas for play.
•  Routines will help her to anticipate what will 
    happen next.
•  She is learning that she is a unique individual.
•  Each child has reached different stages at this  
    age, get to know your child’s abilities.



Health & Support for an 18 month - 2 year old

•  Memory is developing now and he will remember that an object exists even when 
    out of sight.
•  Self soothing is important at this age so thumb sucking or attachment to a toy is 
    common.
•  A schedule during the day for naps, meals and playtimes helps reduce frustration.
•  A strong attachment has developed with parents by now. Leaving is hard and should
    be discussed before the parent goes out.
•  Body exploration is developmentally appropriate and he can learn to do this in 
    privacy.
•  Feelings may be expressed through hitting or biting. Reward the good behaviour 
    and when possible, ignore the actions you do not want.


Health & Support for a 2 - 3 year old

•  She is communicating well and understands abstract concepts like more and less.
•  Many “why” questions are asked at this stage as they expand their communication 
    skills.
•  She is eager to please you and is disappointed with mistakes. Letting her know you
    make them too is important.
•  Lots of praise and encouragement will help with feeling proud and promote trying
    new skills.
•  Play groups allow good social kills to develop as well as an independence from mom
   or dad.
•  You are her best teacher, she will model your behaviour.
