Whether you're planning a family road trip or a weekend staycation, check out our list of things to do in Canada's capital cities.

Favourite indoor activity: Winnipeg’s awardwinning Children’s Museum has 12 permanent galleries for hands-on fun and creative learning – great for birthday parties, and other outings.

Favourite outdoor activity: Fort Whyte Alive is a 640- acre nature centre with everything from a duck pond to fishing (kids 12 and under can take home two fish), and Manitoba’s largest indoor aquarium.

Best-kept secret: If you’re visiting the Winnipeg Art Gallery, wander upstairs to the terrace, where you’re surrounded by lovely sculptures and a pond, a breather in the heart of downtown.

Great place to eat: Sample the delicious pita pockets and pita pies at Baraka Pita Bakery & Mediterranean Deli on Main Street.

Great place to stay: The Inn at the Forks is an easy walking distance to The Children’s Museum, the Winnipeg Railway Museum, the Forks Market and other amenities.

Worth the drive: For a relaxing family holiday, visit the “beautiful lake town” of Gimli: hang out at the beach, stroll along the pier, and get a pickerel burger at one of the local fishermen-supplied joints.
