Getting your children to love brassicas

We received so many delicious-sounding entries to our brassica recipe contest, that we decided to give more of them a go. Here are some simple ways to prepare kale and Brussels sprouts that will make your family fall in love with them!

Ingredients:

1 large bunch kale, chopped and tough stems removed
half a package (about 250 g) bacon, chopped
1 onion, chopped
2/3 cup sour cream (not fat free)

Directions:

1. In large saucepan, fry bacon to desired crispness. Drain off all but 1 tbsp of fat. Add onion to pan and cook, stirring, until softened. Add kale and 1/3 cup water, scraping brown bits from bottom of pan. Cover and cook until wilted. Stir in sour cream.

2. Serve as a meal, with crusty bread to mop up any extra sauce.

Ingredients:

enough Brussels sprouts for your whole family
1 Tbsp. olive oil
1 Tbsp. balsamic vinegar
2-3 Tbsp. honey
sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

Directions:

1. Trim the stem ends of your Brussels sprouts and cut large ones in half. Toss in oil and add salt and pepper to taste. In a grill pan set on the top rack grill the Brussels sprouts until soft in the center and crispy on the outside. Toss grilled Brussels sprouts in balsamic vinegar and honey and serve warm.
