Superfood: Honey

By ParentsCanada on April 19, 2016

The benefits of this liquid gold go much further than taking the bitterness out of a cup of tea. Honey is an effective natural treatment for coughs and sore throats.

Dr. Ran D. Goldman of BC Children’s Hospital said in Canadian Family Physician “a single dose of honey before bedtime was shown in recent studies to diminish cough in children” and works “better than dextromethorphan and diphenhydramine,” two ingredients commonly found in cough syrup.

Honey is not recommended for babies under one year because it can contain spores of bacteria that can lead to botulism.

Honey can also be used to treat wounds and when diluted with warm water, can be used to relieve dandruff or dry, itchy scalp.
