Web-savvy family: Keep a positive online reputation
By: Lynn Hargrove, Cyber mom and director of consumer solutions, Symantec Canada
When kids share the details of their lives online, they leave digital traces all over the Web. What they often don’t realize is that everything posted on the Internet is there for all to see – and it’s probably there indefinitely. All it takes is a single Web search by a potential roommate, university admissions officer or employer and all those photos, opinions and thoughts (no matter when they were posted).
Action plan
Friend your children on social networking sites and review their online activities to see if anything they’ve said, uploaded or commented on might harm their future.
Review social network privacy settings
Delete comments, photos, videos, and posts that are offensive, juvenile, or simply foolish when viewed by a stranger.
