Timeout with Nanny Robina: Belly Button Picking

By Nanny Robina on July 16, 2010

Question:

My 25-month-old daughter constantly picks at her belly button to the point of bleeding. The only way to stop this is to put her in onesies, which she is growing out of. Any suggestions to get her to stop?

Answer:

First, speak with your paediatrician to rule out anything of real concern. Also check to see if the clothes around her waist are uncomfortable, or it the waist line of her diaper is causing her to itch. If it's just become a picking habit then I suggest as soon as you see it happening, use the distraction method. Take her hand and place something in it such as a snack, toy or book. That will take her mind off her navel-gazing.
