Why Diono chose to use steel in their car seats

When it comes to buying a new car seat for your little one, there are lots of things to consider before making a purchase. Should you start with an infant car seat or an all-in-one convertible? When is the right time to switch to a booster? How many car seats will be in your car? Which car seat fits your family dynamic? It can be overwhelming for experienced and new parents alike.

All car seats on the market must pass the same regulations set forth by Transport Canada. That being said, some manufacturers build extra safety features into their car seats that take them above and beyond national crash test standards to offer your child the ultimate in protection.

While all car seats must be made to pass the same crash test standards, not all car seats are made the same. When doing your research, you’ll want to find out what the seats you’re considering are made of. Is it blow-molded plastic? Is it thicker engineered plastic? Does it have a steel reinforced frame? Are there any additional safety features that take the seat over the top?

Here at Diono we’re often asked about the difference between having a car seat with a steel frame versus one that’s only plastic. When we designed the Radian, we wanted to create a car seat that would withstand the rigors of everyday travel and provide the most protection in the event of a crash. At the heart of every Diono all-in-one car seat is our full steel frame which provides the strength needed to withstand real-world crash forces. Deep sidewalls are reinforced with aluminum, as are the head wings on the radian rXT and rainier models. Instead of blow-molded plastic, we use a thick engineered plastic to round out the seat’s construction. Energy absorbing EPS foam surrounds the child and provides another layer of protection. All of these extra safety features come together to make a seat that is heavier than most, but we promise they’re worth the weight! Everything is designed to disseminate crash forces away from the child’s body, allowing them to safely ride down the crash. The rigidity of the full steel frame enables the car seat to stay intact during a crash.

So what’s the difference between plastic versus steel?  Car seats made only of plastic are created to pass the minimum safety standards. At Diono we know that many car crashes surpass crash tests in terms of force, so we designed our car seats to meet real world situations by adding extra engineering into our cars seats.  The full steel frame, extra-thick plastic, aluminum reinforced sidewalls, and the energy absorbing EPS foam are all features we build in to provide your child with the ultimate in car seat safety.
