License Free Family Fishing in Ontario July 6-14!

This is an excellent opportunity to introduce fishing to children if you have not already. If you’re on a holiday or camping, this is an excellent outdoor activity where the whole family can participate.

Remember the old fishing Bert and Ernie skit ? The one where Ernie calls the fish and they jump in the boat? Growing up, I thought that was the secret to great fishing but alas, a little equipment and skill are also required. Rod, reel, fishing line, bait and whole lot of patience are the basics to fishing. Fishing is a wonderful family past time and central and northern Ontario have some of the best fishing in the most beautiful settings. Fishing resorts and lodges are reknowned in Ontario and can be a great family holiday or a family activity everyone should have fun doing.

License Free! July 6-14

This summer starting on Friday July 6, 2013 is Ontario Family Fishing Week. Ontario Family Fishing Events is a province-wide opportunity for Canadian residents to fish Ontario waters without the otherwise mandatory fishing version outdoors card. The Ontario Government designates two periods throughout the year as license-free, February 16-18, 2013 and July 6-14, 2012. During all other time periods, Canadian residents between the ages of 18 and 64 years must purchase an OUTDOORS card and a fishing license to legally fish in Ontario. This is a great opportunity to get out and try fishing as a family! You can get a license at most Canadian Tires or fishing stores.

I’ll be frank in saying that it might take parents to lead the way on this activity. Some kids will be very excited to fish, others not so much and let’s face it, the reality is the biggest key here is patience, which is not exactly the first skill honed in children. So, there are definitely some tips in making this a pleasant experience for everyone and for keeping the kids interested.
