Tech review: Nokia Lumia 900

Compared with Apple, Windows has become the less exciting brand to buy. But if you’re in the market for a new smartphone, don’t rule out the Nokia Lumia 900, a Windows phone.

I spent three weeks testing out the Lumia, and I may never be the same again. Prior to my test-run, I’d never used a smart phone or a touch-screen, so the Lumia was my first experience with both. I couldn’t have been more pleased with how easy to use the phone was.

The Lumia has a massive, clear screen with big clickable icons – perfect for people who have trouble using a touch screen because their fingers are too big. It’s equipped with two cameras, on the front and back of the phone, which take super clear, high-quality photos. (A friend and I compared her Android with the Lumia, and the picture quality was much higher on the Lumia.)

Nokia’s app store has a wide range of apps, from daily news to games, my favourite being Creative Studio – their answer to Instagram. You can add filters to your photo (Summer Evening comes out the nicest), and upload them to Twitter, Facebook, or Flickr, directly from the app.

Another neat app to check out is Overdrive. The app connects you to your local library, and you can check out e-books using your library card. If a book’s been loaned out, you’re put on a waiting list. After two weeks with the e-book, it’s taken back.

If you’re going smart-phone shopping, consider the Nokia Lumia 900. It’s a cheaper alternative to the iPhone, with features that are just as nice – maybe even nicer!
