How to Make Long Car Rides More Enjoyable

All of us aim to make family bonding a priority. But between work, school, extra-curricular activities and weekend commitments, it can seem difficult to plan for quality time when you’re always rushing to get to the next place. Instead, treat the minivan as an extension of the family home. Create opportunities to engage with your children and help them build healthy habits for leading a happy life. Next time you’re driving your children to school or taking a family road trip, consider these helpful tips for how to make the most of family excursions in the car.

  • Give Everyone Their Space. Just like at the kitchen table, give everyone their designated spot in the car. Allow your kids to choose their favourite colouring book or novel to leave in the storage area near their seat. This way, your child always has an activity to occupy their time, and you can help them choose a new item each month. Active families know that it’s not just the children, but also their equipment that requires extra cargo room. The Toyota Sienna is one of the largest mini-vans available, and there’s plenty of extra space for your gear as the comfortable third-row of seating folds down into the floor.
  • Have a Game Plan. Use the middle console or arm rest as a table and break out a deck of cards for an impromptu game of Go Fish or Canasta. Incorporate a game that becomes your family’s way of passing time together. Just like best friends, families can have inside jokes, too.
  • Sing Along the Way. For music-loving families, encourage everyone to play karaoke in the car. Singing is a great bonding experience that releases endorphins and serves as a great way to start your children’s day in a positive frame of mind. Most vehicles including the Toyota Sienna are now equipped with display audio systems that provide touch screen navigation and voice-activated technology. To give your kids a laugh, you can activate the Sienna’s Driver EasySpeak and amplify your voice all the way in the back row with the audio system’s microphone located at the driver’s seat.
  • Choose the Right Road Trip Vehicle. Family vacations can be a juggling act of finding a place where you and your partner can relax and the kids can have fun on a reasonable budget. With a car like the Sienna, distance is no hurdle. The Sienna has excellent fuel efficiency at 10.9 L/100km combined, the double moon-roof opens to allow fresh air throughout your trip and the 8-speed automatic transmission provides smooth shifts for peace and quiet on the drive back home.
  • Prepare for Rain or Shine. Weather can be unpredictable. If it’s raining outside and you need to hunker down indoors, you can store your cooler in the Toyota Sienna’s sunken trunk area and relax while eating in the comfort of heated seats.
  • Relax with Peace of Mind. Having fun with your family in the car comes with feeling confident in your vehicle. The Sienna is the only minivan with available all-wheel drive for LE, XLE and Limited models. To protect your family, there are anti-lock brakes, electronic brake-force distribution, brake assist, vehicle stability control and smart stop technology to provide security when road conditions are not their best.
  • Be Open to One Another. Finally, in creating moments that will become lasting memories, maintain an open mind for conversation and activities, and be willing to make the most of the experience even when its simply enjoying the passing scenery.
