Take a walk on the healthy side!

family walking

“What do you do to stay active?” my doctor diligently asks in our annual meeting. “Well,” I say in earnest, “there’s the dog who needs walking…” and my voice trails off. In the last year or two, though, I have been walking twice a week –a good brisk 60-minute walk, and I’m grateful for every step. I have a walking buddy and together we keep each other motivated. It’s not enough, I know, but it’s better than nothing. My doctor agrees.

A charity walk is a great way to be active and do some good at the same time. This weekend I’ll be checking in on my brother and his family as they participate in their community Walk for ALS in Georgetown, Ont. (walkforals.ca). They are among the more than 100,000 Canadians taking part in local walks to raise funds and awareness for this
disease during June, ALS awareness month.

This month we’re inviting you to show us how you and your family stay healthy. Enter your video in our “I’m Healthy & I Know It” contest, part of Canada’s first ever Healthy Me Week, June 4-10. We’re posting the videos online and asking readers to vote, too. You
could win an awesome Backyard Fun Package courtesy of Neighbourhood Toy Stores, but better yet, you could inspire another reader with your family’s idea of healthy fun!

So get cracking –your family’s web debut awaits.
