Back Pack Bummed Out!

A little bit of machine sewing makes this a perfect learn-to-sew project.

YOU’LL NEED

  • Old jeans
  • Scissors
  • Old neckties (two)
  • Sewing machine and thread

Instructions

  1. Choose a pair of old jeans, whichever size suits the carrier.
  2. Cut off the jeans below the butt (the leftover legs make good gift bags too.)
  3. Sew a seam along the bottom to make a bag.
  4. Thread one old necktie (available at thrift stores or Dad’s closet – ask first!) through the belt loops so the tie ends on one side of the jeans. Thread the other tie the opposite way. When you pull the ends of both ties, the opening of the bag will close tight.
  5. Pin ends of neckties to either sides of the bottom of the cutoffs. Sew in place. The ties become the back pack straps.
