How to Plan an Out-of-This-World Space-Themed Birthday Party

Space Themed Birthday Party

So many kids are fascinated by the concept of space and all things space exploration. If your kiddo is after an out-of-this-world, space themed birthday party, this is the article for you.

Houston, it’s time for a party! If you have a little one who is fascinated by all things space—planets, stars, aliens, galaxies, the list goes on—a space themed birthday party may be in your mission book. Read on for tips to plan the perfect intergalactic gathering.

Entertainment and Activity Ideas

Set the mood by lighting up the room.

Turn out the lights and transport your guests into outer space with a galaxy projector. (They’re available from many different retailers, and they vary in terms of how elaborate the settings are.) Projecting stars on the ceiling is an easy way to make guests feel like they’re really in a galaxy far, far away.

Glow-in-the-dark anything is great.

The dollar store is full of glow in the dark items, from necklaces and bracelets to artwork and toys. All of these items lend themselves perfectly to a space-themed birthday party. Think glow in the dark star stickers on the walls and ceiling, glow in the dark tattoos and glow sticks in different colours.

Set up a Saturn ring toss.

No themed party is complete without a themed game or two. This game is a space-themed modification on the classic Ring Toss. You only need some cones and plastic rings. On each players’ turn they will toss a ring, aiming to land it over the cones. (Got a little extra time? Get crafty and use chalk and glitter glue to make the rings a little more interstellar.)

What to Serve at a Space Themed Birthday Party

Space might seem like a difficult theme when it comes to party food but it just takes a little out-of-this-world thinking. Think about the following when you’re assembling your menu:

Astronaut ice cream: This is literally ice cream that has been freeze-dried to remove all of the liquid, giving it a long shelf life—it’s perfect for outer space! Astronaut ice cream can be purchased in individual sandwich packages, making it a great party favour or snack.

Fruit rockets: Stack some fruit pieces on a skewer, using an upside down strawberry last, as the top of the rocket. Serve with cinnamon-swirled “galaxy” yogurt for dipping.

Stars and planets: Otherwise known as cheese and crackers, only you use a cookie cutter to make star-shaped cheese and serve with round “planet” crackers.  You can also throw some dried cheese chunks on the platter as “moon rocks”—these are available in most grocery stores.

Loot Bag Ideas

It’s time to thank your guests for making your party a blast (see what we did there?). Your space theme means you can hand out anything from from moon rock candy to neon glow sticks and glow-in-the-dark stickers.

Extra Tips and Tricks

A space-themed party obviously needs stellar music. Create a playlist with classics like Elton John’s Rocket Man, David Bowie’s Space Oddity and R.E.M’s Man on the Moon. The kids might not know the tunes, but the connection won’t be lost on the parents at the party!
